This article explains the Mosaic image cycle, and shows you how to avoid seeing duplicate images on the output.
How the Mosaic Cycles Through Images
The Mosaic runs in a loop. When it’s live, it won’t introduce newly approved photos until the current loop finishes. A loop is considered complete once all currently approved images have been shown and every tile has flipped at least once.
So if, for example, you have 10 approved photos and then approve 10 more while the Mosaic is already running, the new photos won’t appear until that initial loop completes. During that time, the Mosaic may reuse some of the existing images, which can look like duplication.
This is more noticeable when there are fewer images overall. The Mosaic needs enough images to populate both sides of the flipping tiles; for the default layout that's 20 images total:
- 10 images for the front
- 10 images for the back
That’s why duplicates are most apparent when there are fewer than 20 approved images. Once you have 20+ approved photos, the effect typically disappears.
Best ways to avoid seeing duplicates:
- Try to have at least 20 approved images before going live for the default template
- If needed, manually upload images ahead of time to build up the pool
- After adding new photos during a live Mosaic, allow one full loop to complete before expecting them to appear
